Permitting Process
Since wave energy is a relatively new technology, particularly to Oregon, a strong, established permitting process is yet to be developed. Currently, permit applications for wave energy facilities are managed by the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC). You can view currently filed FERC permits for the whole U.S. Pacific Coast here. Current OREGON applications are listed below.
There are many potential stakeholders, everywhere from informed citizens, government agencies at the federal, state, and local level, environmental interest groups, fishing companies, and more.
Establishing a clear permitting process for wave energy developers, and one which provides opportunities for public participation, careful oversight and protection of local economies and environments, is essential.
Existing Permit Applications for Oregon:
- Ocean Power Technology (OPT)- Reedsport
- OPT - Coos Bay
- Douglas County - Reedsport

The information below provides background data and discussion on organizations who are taking part in developing the permitting process.
